Australia has distinctive ecosystems for environmental studies

Marine ecosystems, deserts, rainforests, snowfields and tropical islands - Australia has one of the most varied landscapes on earth. There is no better place to undertake environmental study and research. In some regions you can drive from the ocean, through rainforests and into the desert in a matter of hours. Along the way you'll see an array of animal life that has evolved in isolation from the rest of the world, resulting in species unique to Australia.

Australia's spectacular scenery has been drawing tourists to its shores for decades. Touring the country is a great way to spend a few weeks, but taking classes in environmental studies is the best way to appreciate and experience Australia's amazing surroundings, and to contribute to solutions for environmental issues.

Strong research focus

Australian universities have a strong research focus, which is enhanced through the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) program. The program, a collaboration between universities, government and industry, has 71 CRCs, 18 of which are dedicated to environmental issues. These state-of-the-art research centres focus on the practical, commercial applications of research to environmental problems.

A broad range of study areas

Australian tertiary institutions offer hundreds of environment-related courses in many specialisations. Areas of study include sustainability, resource management, biodiversity, ecology, conservation and restoration, recycling, water use and management, environmental science, geology, geography, zoology, botany, marine science and environmental biotechnology.

As demand for professionals specialising in environmental issues grows, courses are increasingly linking in with other disciplines such as business, law, engineering, tourism, public relations and health. Students can undertake studies in agribusiness, environmental law, eco-tourism and environmental health.

Through gaining knowledge and exposure to Australia's unique and innovative environmental research and education, graduates can return to their home countries and provide answers to the most important issues we face.
