Study art and design, fashion, music, film-making and product design in a fresh, innovative environment
To millions watching from around the globe, New Zealand is emerging as a refreshing source of individuality and hotbed of creativity. Its creative companies have built a reputation for exceptionally high-quality products, ethical and professional methods of doing business and uparalleled design across the board.
Musicians across genres, such as The Datsuns and Hayley Westenra are also forging New Zealand's reputation as a creative, vibrant Pacific nation.
Film makers from around the world are increasingly turning to New Zealand for locations, specialist staff and facilities and to tap into the wealth of creative people available to the industry.
New Zealand's creative film-industry talent doesn't stop at Peter Jackson and his ‘Lord of the Rings' team. A long list of successful cinematographers and actors originate from New Zealand, many of whom are Academy Award winning. For example directors Andrew Adamson, Niki Caro, Roger Donaldson, Jane Campion and Lee Tamahori and actors Lucy Lawless, Russell Crowe, Anna Paquin and Sam Neill. Maori actors Temuera Morrison and Cliff Curtis are also making a name in the US.
Expanding the creative sector is a high priority for the New Zealand government, and a stream of highly qualified graduates are being trained at tertiary institutions to help realise this goal. High quality specialist courses, and advanced industry training in all aspects of design, fine arts, performing arts, film, television, radio, visual effects and media production are available at education institutions throughout New Zealand.
Some of the most creative design today is coming from students. Student Jai Wen will have his new concept for car owners exhibited at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. He has designed a push-me-pull-you car that can be separated into two smaller cars. This enables a family to have two small, economical cars for weekday use, and then join them together to form a bigger car for the weekend!
