Making fashion

Ozge Derman from Istanbul, Turkey, shares her experience of being a fashion student in Milan

Coming to Italy was a last minute decision for me. I was a bit scared in the beginning, first of all I should have learned Italian and should have got the force to live alone, to fight with the difficulties that a person could be confronted with in a new city. I was looking for creative study and I was feeling the lack of creativity in my country at that time.

The best thing about studying in a foreign university I think is to make so many friends from all over the world. I haven't got that many Turkish friends so it was easier to learn Italian and I've got to possibility to speak English as well.

I was learning to become a creative fashion designer, and at the same time I had the chance to see so many interesting exhibitions and fashion shows here in Milan. The fortune of a big fashion city like Milan is to be surrounded by fashion on a daily basis, watching everything directly on the street and attending the important art events.

The university has given me the opportunity to do an exchange with an institute in Paris for 4 months, which was a great help for my creativity. This made me much more self-confident about my work and I learnt to speak another language too.

The real difficulty was, and still is, not having my family and friends with me. I miss my city Istanbul as well, especially the relaxing sea there. In Turkey I was used to get everything easily and not having as much responsability. Even with all the physical and moral support of my family, here in Milan I was alone so I had only my own spiritual force to survive. Anyway I've got so much willingness to learn what I always wanted to do and I understand now what a stubborn personality I have got.

In the future I would like to create my own collection and open my own showroom. I would like to see my creations on the people all over the world. I would like to have my own art exhibition or to participate a biennial. I haven't got a need to be only a fashion designer. For me fashion is a kind of art, to express myself. First of all, a fashion designer has to be an artist and that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to find the right way to be the special one, the original one, not the commercial one. I'm still at the beginning, and I'm excited and curious about my future.
